Journal of Field Robotics Special Issue: 
Teamwork in Field Robotics


Special Issue Guest Editors: 

Anibal Ollero, University of Seville, Spain, and 
M. Bernardine Dias, Carnegie Mellon University, USA and Qatar


An increasing number of applications require robots to operate as part of a
team in unstructured environments. Moreover, many applications require
highly heterogeneous teams composed of a variety of robots and other
participants including humans, sensor networks, software agents, and
remotely piloted devices. These teams are relevant and even necessary in
many domains including exploration, mapping, disaster response,
reconnaissance, sports, border patrol, perimeter sweeping, surveillance, and
many more.  


Fielded robots operating in team settings, especially in unstructured
environments, present many challenges to robotics researchers.  These
challenges include uncertainty to unknown and dynamic field environments,
robust performance including failure detection and recovery in the face of a
variety of failures, scaling to large distances, and interaction with human
team-mates and operators in the field. Even the logistics of fielding robots
as part of a team can present a variety of challenges such as power,
communications, safety, transportation, coordination, and test sites.


The Journal of Field Robotics (JFR) announces a special issue on teamwork in
field robotics to examine these and other issues related to robots in teams
fielded in unstructured environments. This special issue will present and
discuss the state of the art in robots designed for teamwork in unstructured
environments, their theory and practice.


We invite papers that exhibit theory and methods applied to fielded teams

*	specification and evaluation of system concepts and designs; 
*	coordination architectures relevant to operations in unstructured
*	mechanisms to coordinate teams of ground, aerial and marine robots; 
*	strategies for efficient operation of teams including humans and
*	factors for ensuring robustness in fielded team operations; 
*	algorithms for efficient interaction with the environment in fielded
team settings; 
*	implementations that allow team operations to scale to large
*	techniques for reliable information sharing in fielded teams; 
*	experiments in relevant application domains; and 
*	metrics and benchmarks for evaluating and comparing performance. 


Papers for this special issue must also provide technical descriptions of
systems and results and analysis of experimentation with teams fielded in
unstructured environments. Lessons learned in development and operation are
also pertinent.


We encourage papers addressing all aspects of fielded teams. Our emphasis is
on systems that address challenges relevant to robots operating as part of a
team in unstructured environments. All papers should provide evidence of
demonstration in the field. The JFR encourages multimedia content and this
special issue seeks inclusion of movies illustrating system concept and
operation, engineering experiments, and fielded teams in action.

February 15, 2007 - Receive final manuscripts for publication
