Special Issue on SLAM in the Field

The theme of this special issue of JFR will be Simultaneous Localisation and
Mapping (SLAM) in the field. We encourage submissions that describe issues,
implementations and progress towards deploying SLAM algorithms in field
settings. The intended scope covers not only the algorithms employed but
also discussions of sensor choice and exploitation, platforms and system
architectures. Emphasis should be placed on the technical issues that
differentiate between indoor and outdoor deployments. Papers considering
map, state and perceptual representations, persistence (longevity),
robustness and performance analysis are particularly welcome. It is hoped
this call will solicit papers from a diverse set of field domains-- from
deep ocean to planetary surfaces and all in between. Although the primary
focus will be SLAM and its application in field robotics, papers that deal
with navigating vehicles in truly challenging field settings and make novel
use of infrastructure or a-priori information will also be considered.

Revised Deadlines:

    * May 1, 2006 - Submit papers
    * June 15, 2006 - Deadline for reviewers to finish reviews
    * July 15, 2006 - Authors are informed of decisions
    * Sep 1, 2006 - Final copies from the authors

Authors interested in submitting to this special issue should discuss
submissions with the Special Issue Editor, Paul Newman
(pnewman at robots.ox.ac.uk).
