The NEWHRI workshop will take place on May 19, 2008, in Pasadena,
California, in conjunction with the ICRA 2008 Conference.

In this full-day workshop, we aim to bring greater clarity to the scope
and direction of Human-Robot Interaction. This workshop will bring
together established and student researchers from HRI and the greater
robotics community to answer three primary questions:

  1) What characteristics unify and should be common to all areas of HRI
research?

  2) What properties typify novel and significant research in HRI?

  3) How can we further synergistic research between HRI and the broader
robotics community?

Invited and student researchers from different HRI-related areas will
share their perspectives on these questions in a paired talk format.
Breakout discussion sections rising from these presentations will involve
all attendees in an ongoing discussion to foster cross fertilization among
subareas of HRI.

Student Participation
---------------------

Student researchers from all areas of HRI-related research are invited to
contribute to the workshop program. Areas of interest include but are not
limited to:
* HRI Systems and Design
* Social Robotics
* Experimental HRI
* Robot Learning
* Cognitive and Developmental Robotics

Students should submit a 2 page abstract concisely answering the core
workshop questions and describing how their work fits into HRI. Abstracts
should be submitted in PDF format by January 15, 2008 to
newhri at cs.brown.edu. Selected participants (8-10) will give a 10 minute
presentation. This talk will be accordingly paired with that of an
invited researcher based on topic. Student participants will receive
limited support for travel and registration.
