 NASA's Ames Research Center (ARC) is pleased to announce the release of the
EUROPA software platform under NASA's open source agreement (NOSA).


 *Background*:

EUROPA (Extendable Uniform Remote Operations Planning Architecture) is an
advanced constrained based temporal planning platform [4]. Its architecture
contains modules that can be used to solve problems in constraint
satisfaction, planning, scheduling and combinatorial optimization.

In addition to being a research platform, EUROPA has been deployed
extensively, for example :

   1.

   1999 Remote Agent eXperiment (RAX), the first AI planner in space on
   NASA's Deep Space One mission (with JPL) [1,2,3]
   2.

   2004 Life In The Atacama (LITA) for the onboard control of a
   long-duration traverse mission in the Chilean desert (with CMU) [5,6]
   3.

   2004 Mixed-initiative Activity Plan GENerator (MAPGEN) for the
   mission-critical ground-based command and control of the Mars Exploration
   Rovers Mission (with JPL) [7,8]
   4.

   2006 Support for Power Systems control of the International Space
   Station (with JSC)
   5.

   2006 Teleo-Reactive EXecutive (T-REX), for the on-board command and
   control of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's (MBARI) Autonomous
   Underwater Vehicle [9]


 We thank NASA Ames' Tech Partnership Division and MBARI for their help in
getting EUROPA released under NOSA.

The EUROPA portal contains documentation, examples, pointers to
EUROPA-related publications and provides access to EUROPA's code repository.


In addition to this, the group

has been created to host discussions about all EUROPA-related topics.


 As a result of this open source release, the EUROPA team is looking forward
to more vigorous collaboration with the CP, AI and OR communities; hoping to
facilitate their research and application work, while at the same time being
able to incorporate their knowledge and insight into EUROPA.
