ICRA2011 Full-Day Workshop on Mechanisms for Surgical Robotics

We would like to draw your attention to the IEEE ICRA 2011 Workshop on Mechanisms for Surgical Robotics to be held at Shanghai, China on 9 May 2011. This full day workshop is to bring top researchers in the world on surgical robotics to present the cutting edge work on mechanisms for surgical robotics. This workshop will provide a gathering ground for researchers with common interests in mechanisms for surgical robotics to share the most recent progresses and to discuss the future direction and leading edge.

In addition to following eight world leading experts in surgical robotics, we would like to invite more researchers in this field to give a talk and/or to participate this exciting workshop. The workshop can be registered through ICRA conference registration website. If you are interested in presenting you recent work please send the following items to us (email: helge.wuerdemann at kcl.ac.uk) on or before March 14th,

1. Full contact info including affiliation
2. Proposed title (if there is any change)
3. A short (150 words) abstract addressing how the talk relates to workshop theme
4. A draft .ppt presentation (if possible, a draft-paper or extended abstract or guidelines for preparing contributing to a journal special issue or a book chapter)
5. Two related publications
6. A URL to the home page describing related research or a related research paper

The workshop will include the presentations of a list of international renowned experts, who are working at the cutting edge of surgical robotics:

The workshop will also have a live-transmission of Da Vinci robot operation at Guy's Hospital, King's College London, University of London operated by the renowned surgeon Professor Prokar Daspugta.

The Workshop will present views from academics, engineers and surgeons focusing on mechanisms development and design, kinematics and dynamics, dexterous manipulation and control in keyhole surgery, orthopaedic surgery and evolutionary surgical robots. The challenges of sensory-guided surgical robots, manipulation and gripping issues particularly in suturing will be presented and discussed.

The substantial debate will be given on obstacles and challenges and the future direction of robotic surgery and a platform will be provided for wider discussions and multidisciplinary collaboration between engineers and surgeons.

The following topics will be explored:

• Current status of surgical robot development in Europe and the world
• Mechanisms development and surgical instrument development
• Kinematics and dynamics of surgical robots
• Sensors and dexterous manipulation
• Future direction of development in surgical robots.
