*** Introduction ***

The ocean covers about two thirds of the earth and has a great effect on the future existence of all human beings. Marine robots including unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) can help us better understand marine and other environmental issues, protect the ocean resources of the earth from pollution, and efficiently utilize them for human welfare.

The demand for advanced marine robot technologies has been growing. During the last decade, the marked progress in marine technologies and robotics has led to massive improvements of a new and very active area of applied research: Marine Robotics. The state of the art and some achievements in this area are particularly innovative. 

The primary goal of this special issue is to present recent advancement in unmanned underwater (UUVs) and surface (USVs) robotic vehicle technologies. This special issue is organized by the Marine Robotics Technical Committee of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. Original, high quality research papers in marine robotics are invited. Papers addressing one or more of the topics below are of particular interest:

- UUVs for underwater intervention, with particular attention to solution and application examples of autonomous or remotely operated underwater manipulation systems.
- Underwater target localization and tracking
- Communication, mapping, sensor data processing, and localization and navigation techniques for UUVs or USVs
- Multiple UUV or USV systems for various applications.
