The 1st Workshop on "Robotics in Assistive Environments"
at the 4th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related Assistive environments (PETRAe) 2011
in Crete, Greece , May 25-27th

*Workshop Theme and Goals*
This workshop will explore the paradigm shift provided by the use of robots in assistive environments (AE). Due to the fact that robots can interact with the environment and redeploy their sensing and end-effector assets, they can accomplish much more complex tasks than stationary sensors. Just like in manufacturing, where robots play an important role in automation, the use of robotics in AE can provide advantages such as flexibility, reconfigurability, and remote assistance. Topics for the workshop will include planning and control algorithms, bio-inspired mechanical robot designs, sensor fusion and distributed networking strategies for AE robots. We seek high quality papers describing technologies and applications ranging from more conventional uses of service robots in the home (such as care-takers and aids to motor impaired patients), to rehabilitation robots for in-hospital care, and to emerging conversational robots for social interaction and medical treatment evaluation.

*Topics of Interest*
We are interested in original papers including but not limited to:
    * Human Robot Interaction (HRI) using distance sensing
    * Physical HRI
    * New sensors for HRI
    * Human metrology by robots
    * Real-time HRI
