Call for papers

RSS 2012 Workshop on Robots in Clutter: Manipulation, Perception and
Navigation in Human Environments
Sydney, Australia

The organizers invite you to submit a paper for review to the RSS 2012
Workshop on Robots in Clutter. This two-morning workshop will consist
of contributed paper sessions, a poster session, discussion sessions,
and three invited keynote speakers. The authors will have the option
of publishing contributed papers containing novel work in a citable
digital archive of the proceedings.

Important Dates

* *Extended submission deadline: May 20th, 2012*
* Notification of acceptance: May 30th, 2012
* Workshop: July 9-10, 2012

Robots operating in our homes will inevitably be confronted with
scenes that are simultaneously congested, unorganized, diverse and
complex - or, simply put, cluttered. Clutter is a universal problem
and severely affects all robot operations: manipulation, perception,
navigation, and sensing. This makes it extremely difficult for a
single approach to effectively handle clutter, perhaps explaining why
robots (and robotics researchers) often shy away from it.

This workshop aims to bring researchers from different domains
together and promote a discussion about clutter. This will contribute
to robotics research in at least two ways. First, it will be a venue
for the exchange of strategies, ideas, and algorithms used by
individual domains. Second, it will provide an opportunity to discuss
system-level approaches where manipulation, perception, and navigation
work together. We hope to explore directions that will accelerate the
deployment of robots into real human settings performing useful tasks
even in the presence of clutter.

All submissions should be in PDF format using the RSS template. Papers
should be approximately 4-6 pages in length. Submissions should be
emailed to clutter12 at willowgarage.com by May 20th, 2012. Notification
of acceptance will be on or before May 30th. All submission will be
reviewed for relevance to the topic of the workshop as well as
scientific merit. Reviews will be carried out by the organizing
committee, with additional input from external reviewers as needed.

Invited speakers

* Prof. Darius Burschka, Technische Universitat Munchen
* Prof. Charlie Kemp, Georgia Institute of Technology
* Prof. John Leonard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
