The International Journal of Robotics Research (IJRR) invites papers for a
special issue on Mechanics and Design of Robotic Hands. There has been a
renewed interest in recent years to work towards robotic hands that are
effective in addressing the needs of modern robotic systems. As robots
increasingly move out of the lab and into unstructured environments, the
need for hands designed to function under the uncertainty and wide range of
conditions associated with those environments has become more pressing. This
special issue seeks a collection of papers that addresses the mechanics and
practical design requirements associated modern grasping and manipulation,
including systems that are lightweight, dexterous, mobile-friendly,
inexpensive, robust to uncertainty, and durable. Lessons learned in both
development and in operation are pertinent to the discussion. Experimental
results are strongly encouraged, as is a discussion of the fundamental
lessons that the work contributes to research in the area. IJRR encourages
multimedia content and this issue seeks inclusion of media that effectively
illustrate the systems, approaches, and results presented in the papers.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

- Hand Design

- Mechanics of Hand-based Manipulation

- Underactuated Grasping

- Dexterous Manipulation

- Design for Mobile Manipulation

- Design for Grasp Synergies

- Novel Actuators and Transmissions for Hands

- Grasping for Flexible Manufacturing

Additionally, papers that address strong interconnections between mechanical
design, actuation, power transmission, sensing and control are also of
interest. Topics that do not speak to issues related to design or mechanics
are out of scope.

Authors of prospective papers unsure of whether their topic is within scope
are welcome to contact the special issue editors to discuss.

Papers must contain high-quality original contributions and be prepared in
accordance with IJRR guidelines. All papers will be reviewed following the
regular reviewing procedure of the Journal. Please note that IJRR has no
page limit on papers and is a leader in archival publishing of multimedia -
data sets, code and videos with papers.

Manuscript Submission

Instructions for authors, including information about ``Multimedia
Extensions'', are available on the IJRR website. Submissions should be
uploaded to IJRR's website. Under 'Manuscript Type', select 'Hand Design'.
Please note that the publisher does not provide templates or style files.
For the initial review process you need only upload a PDF of the complete
paper with figures and tables integrated in the text, and multimedia files
if appropriate. For questions concerning submissions email: Jennet Batten,
Managing Editor (ijrr_man_editor at btinternet.com)
