Robots are a unique “digital manipulative” that offer a broad set of
affordances to facilitate the learning of computer science. Oftentimes the
same robot can be used in an introductory programming class as a way to
physically instantiate student-written programs as well as in advanced
classes on AI or real-time systems. Robotics projects often include
opportunities for creativity or for the development of life-like behaviors
that can create a bond between programmers and their creations. A diverse
set of richly interactive, low cost, and easily programmable robots have
become available for use in Computer Science education over the last
decade, and educators have used these tools in a large variety of ways.

We solicit articles that describe original work on any aspect of robotics
in computer science education. Suitable topics include, but are not limited

●    Robot projects in courses across the CS curriculum, at all levels of
●    Use of robots to teach computing concepts outside of traditional
computer science courses, including both traditional non-CS courses and
informal learning environments.
●    Strategies for assessing student robotics projects.
●    Studies on the impact of robot-centered courses on recruitment,
retention, and/or learning, particularly those comparing impacts between
robot-centered and non-robot courses.
●    Studies on the impact of robot-centered courses or activities on
recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups.
●    Research methods for evaluating the effectiveness of robotics programs
in learning CS concepts.
●    Literature reviews of robots in CS education.
●    New robot hardware platforms and robot simulation environments
suitable for use in CS education.

Full papers are ideally 5,000 to 7,000 words long. Both abstracts and full
papers should be in Word or PDF, formatted according to the instructions at:

Computer Science Education aims to publish high-quality papers with a
specific focus on teaching and learning within the computing discipline
that are accessible and of interest to educators, researchers, and
practitioners alike. Depending on their special interests, those working in
the field may draw on subject areas as diverse as statistics, educational
theory and the cognitive sciences in addition to technical computing
knowledge. Papers may present work at different scales, from
classroom-based empirical studies through evaluative comparisons of
pedagogic approaches across institutions or countries and of different
types from the practical to the theoretical. The journal is not dedicated
to any single research orientation. Studies based on qualitative data, such
as case studies, historical analysis and theoretical, analytical or
philosophical material, are equally highly regarded as studies based on
quantitative data and experimental methods. It is expected that all papers
should inform the reader of the methods and goals of the research; present
and contextualise results, and draw clear conclusions.
