Workshop session: Towards standardization of wearable robots: benchmarking &
regulatory aspects
Venue: WeRob - International Workshop on Wearable Robotics, Baiona, Spain
(http://www.werob2014.org)
Date: Tuesday 16th Sept, 9:00-13:00
==========================

Description:
When innovative technologies appear and enter the market they have to find
their place in the existing networks of standardization and regulation. This
also and especially counts for wearable robotics, as they are intended to be
in direct contact with human users, which brings about many safety issues.
This workshop aims at contributing to discuss the state of standardization
and regulation around wearable robotics and at identifying the needed next
steps on these aspects in order to support market introduction and
market-oriented development of wearable robots.
In this workshop we focus on two important aspects of standardization:
benchmarking and regulatory aspects. In benchmarking the issue is how to
describe or evaluate the performance of a technology. This can initially
serve for comparing results among research groups, but also to test whether
the technology is ready to leave the lab, or to meet official performance
standards. ‘Regulatory aspects’ concerns the legal situation around a
technology and can relate to production standards, safety regulations or
again performance standards. This workshop is addressed to researchers,
professionals and end-users interested in understanding the basic concepts
of the standardization process. The main differences between medical
devices, industrial machinery, and personal care robots, as well as the
current efforts in the framework of ISO and IEC, will be highlighted.
Practical examples of regulatory aspects around current rehabilitation and
human-inspired robotics will be given by selected experts and EU projects
coordinators.
A poster session will be devoted for PhD students and young researchers
working on the topics of the workshop. The workshop will be concluded by a
wrap-up discussion devoted to outline the conclusions, identifying the
critical issues that deserve further analysis, and drawing possibilities of
future collaborations between participants.
