Dear Roboticist,

we are pleased to invite you to the IROS 2014 Workshop on "Human-Robot Collaboration in Standardization and R&D Activities"

Workshop Homepage http://www.clawar.org/WorkshopHRC/index.html

Held in conjunction with IROS 2014 in Chicago, USA, 14th of September http://iros2014.org/

*** Key Dates ***

21 August 2014: Submission of extended abstracts

01 September 2014: Notification of Acceptance

14 September 2014: Workshop date

*** Motivation & Objectives ***

The workshop aims to create closer links between robot standardization and robot R&D sectors for targeting rapid development of effective, market-driven human-robot solutions to meet mandatory regulations. The two communities will be brought together to foster discussion in the context of mature robot sectors and new emerging robot domains. The aim of this workshop is to assist the development of definitive experimental scenarios and protocols for benchmarking the growing range of robot-human applications.

*** Topics ***

The workshop invites submissions describing original work, either completed or still in progress, related to one or more of the following topics grouped loosely in the three areas of Human-Robot Interaction, Standardization and Benchmarking Robotics R&D:

HRI:

  * Future directions in HRI to allow benchmarking intelligence in realistic scenarios
  * Testing scenarios and protocols for HRI to produce normative definitions and data for real-world cases
  * Approaches for measuring autonomy or performance metrics based on information theory of intelligent HRI systems

 Standardization:

  * Metrics of safety, physical contacts, technical aspects and limitations
  * Guidelines for technical regulations influencing HRI design in industrial, personal care and medical domains
  * Current status of ISO/IEC robot standardization activities development
  * Robotics scientific community’s input to standardization bodies

Benchmarking, Robotics R&D:

  * Role of Benchmarking and Robotics challenges and competitions in advancing standardized testing procedures
  * Benchmarking: objectively and quantitatively evaluating robot performance
  * Use of statistical methods of improving confidence and reliability of robot performance
  * Methods for shared infrastructure for facilitating benchmarking processes

*** Author Instructions ***

Workshop contributions (extended abstracts of 2-4 pages, presented during the workshop in poster format) should be submitted via e-mail to fabio.bonsignorio at gmail.com<mailto:fabio.bonsignorio at gmail.com>.

All submissions will be reviewed by the review panel. Abstracts should be formatted according to the IEEE format. For templates and examples follow the link http://ras.papercept.net/conferences/support/support.php.

Notice of acceptance will be given on Monday, September 1, 2014. The workshop is intended for lively discussion, therefore the accepted contributions will be presented as posters. In plenary mode, an expert panel will trigger discussion to find common themes and issues for harmonization based on the contributions received.
