The purpose of this workshop is to share best practices for teaching
courses in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) for undergraduate and graduate
students, as well as to discuss experiences in using HRI in lower and
informal education.  HRI is a young and growing field that is of increasing
interest to students and educators. This workshop is motivated by an
interest in creating a shared set of best practices and curriculum ideas
for teaching HRI.  It aims to bring together stakeholders and give them an
opportunity to frame the direction of HRI education as the field continues
to grow.

During the workshop, participants will discuss the format, topics and
prerequisites necessary to teach an introductory multidisciplinary HRI
course for graduates and undergraduates, as well as how the topic of HRI
can be integrated into education in various fields, education levels
(including K-12), and in informal learning environments. Participants will
also discuss assignments, concepts, projects, labs, and homework exercises
that can be used to teach HRI principles.  Participants will also discuss
options for a low-cost robotics platform including necessary configuration,
sensors, and peripherals. Another potential topic is the contributions HRI
education can make to broaden education in STEM disciplines.  The workshop
will also include talks/panels by six confirmed invited speakers:  Jennifer
Burke, Mike Goodrich, Illah Nourbakhsh, Brian Scassellati, Andrea Thomaz,
and Astrid Weiss.

We invite researchers and educators interested in human-robot interaction
education to submit a 2-page extended abstract or 4-page position papers on
a topic related to the workshop.  This workshop focus is on education in
HRI, including primary objectives of an HRI course, key topics, learning
activities, hardware and software requirements, and contributions that
learning about HRI can make to education in a variety of disciplines.
Papers relating to education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as
well as K-12 and informal education are welcome. In order to encourage a
diverse range of perspectives, submissions are requested from a wide range
of disciplines (e.g. engineering, computer science, psychology, education).

Papers and abstracts should be formatted according to the HRI 2015 paper
guidelines (IEEE format).  The submissions should include the authors’
names, affiliation address, phone number and email address on the first
page.  Please clearly indicate the corresponding author and include up to 6
keywords. Submissions will be peer reviewed. Selected papers will be
presented in 20 minute talks including 5 minutes for questions, while
selected abstracts will be presented in lightning talks of up to 10 minutes
including questions. Videos or photographs of course work are encouraged
during the paper presentation to enable the audience to understand the
work; videos may also be submitted along with the paper to aid in review.
Accepted papers will be available on CD and published on the workshop
website.  Further publication in a journal is in discussion and depends on
the number and quality of the submitted papers.
