EURATHLON 2014 SEA ROBOTICS COMPETITION:

euRathlon is a new outdoor robotics competition that invites teams to test the intelligence and autonomy of their robots in challenging scenarios. Specifically, the project will propose and organize three different competitions: a land robotics competition carried out in Berchtesgaden, Germany, in September 2013; a sea robotics competition that will be held in Italy in 2014 and finally the euRathlon Grand Challenge involving the cooperation of robots from the sea, land and air domains that will be held in Italy in 2015. The 2015 euRathlon Grand Challenge will propose challenges inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident and will require a combined team of robots to work together to survey the area of interest, collect environmental data, identify critical hazards and intervene on equipment present on the scene. Only through robot cooperation will the teams be able to successfully accomplish the proposed tasks.

EURATHLON is a project funded by the European Commission under its Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7). Professor Alan Winfield of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) and the University of the West of England (UWE) is leading the EURATHLON consortium with six partner organizations.

The scenarios for the EURATHLON 2014 sea competition are focused on the aspects that will characterize the euRathlon 2015 Grand Challenge. In this way, the teams participating can use the 2014 sea competition as a valid benchmark to design and test solutions for the final euRathlon Grand Challenge.

Five different tasks will be proposed to the teams, specifically “LONG RANGE AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER NAVIGATION”, “ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY OF THE ACCIDENT AREA”, “LEAK LOCALISATION AND STRUCTURE INSPECTION”, “INTERACTION WITH UNDERWATER STRUCTURES” and “COMBINED SCENARIO”.

In the scenarios it is suggested to compete by using an AUV. A USV can be used to support and to help AUV operations. However, there are scenarios in which a team can compete by using only a USV.

Each participant team can subscribe to compete to one or more scenarios.

Teams may comprise any combination of students, faculty, industrial partners, or government partners with a maximum of 10 people per team. Students may be undergraduate and/or postgraduate students. Inter-disciplinary teams are encouraged. Members from industry, government agencies (or universities, in the case of faculty) can participate.

Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge – Europe (SAUC-E) 2014 (http://sauc-europe.org/) will be held at the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), the same location of euRathlon 2014 one week before (from September 20 to September 26, 2014).

SAUC-E AND EURATHLON ARE TWO SEPARATE EVENTS BUT WILL BE ORGANIZED BACK-TO-BACK IN 2014.

WHILE SAUC-E WELCOMES NEW PARTICIPANTS TO MARINE ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS, EURATHLON WILL PRESENT MORE CHALLENGING TASKS AND WILL BE MORE SELECTIVE. WE WARMLY ENCOURAGE THE PARTICIPATION OF TEAMS TO BOTH THE EVENTS. _FURTHERMORE, WE WILL GIVE THE POSSIBILITY DURING THE PERIOD OF SAUC-E 2014 FOR INTERESTED TEAMS TO PRACTICE FOR SOME EURATHLON TASKS_. For this, we will provide teams with access to dedicated areas and the possibility to interact with some objects used for the euRathlon competition.

Official information concerning rules, interpretations, and information about the competition can be found on euRathlon website (www.eurathlon.eu[2]) and the related euRathlon forum (http://www.eurathlon.eu/phpbb/).

CALL FOR THE LOAN OF THREE AUVS (SPARUS II) AND TWO DVLS (FROM TELEDYNE RD INSTRUMENTS) IS NOW OPEN!

The euRathlon consortium will provide THREE SPARUS II AUVS manufactured by the University of Girona FOR LOAN TO 3 SELECTED APPLICANT TEAMS. Furthermore TWO EXPLORER DVL 600KHZ, PHASED ARRAY TRANSDUCER, 300M depth rating (from Teledyne RD Instruments) (http://www.rdinstruments.com/explorer.aspx) will be loaned TO 2 APPLICANT TEAMS.

Providing robust platforms and instruments to the teams will clearly allow for shifting of the focus on cognition, intelligence, and autonomy of the robots. In addition, this approach will potentially attract non-sea domain researchers to enter 2014 event and, in turn, increase their chance of winning the 2015 ‘grand challenge’ event combining their cross domain platforms.

The teams wishing to borrow the AUVs and the DVLs must apply to the EURATHLON Consortium, following the procedure described on the website. Applications received will be evaluated by the Consortium to select the teams who will be granted the loan equipment.

THE TEAMS APPLYING FOR LOAN EQUIPMENT MUST BE REGISTERED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EURATHLON 2014 COMPETITION.

The deadline for application is 31 March, 2014. Please see www.eurathlon.eu[3] for detailed information.

THE UNIVERSITY/CENTRE OR COMPANY TEAMS MUST BE WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU).
