Workshop Aims:
Cognitive Surgical Robotics addresses the broad research area that involves the integration of 
advanced cognitive capabilities into robot-assisted surgical procedure. Examples of cognitive 
features are surgical workflow analysis, situation awareness, and automatic task execution. This 
workshop follows other successful workshops on similar topics held in Heidelberg in January 2012, 
Milano in July 2012, Karlsruhe in May 2013 and at the 2013 Hamlyn Symposium. These past events 
established the ground of cognitive robotics for surgery, and the current workshop aims at reviewing 
the results achieved so far and at discussing the scientific and clinical perspective of adding 
cognitive features to robotic surgery.
We will bring together young and senior scientists, company developers and end users to bridge the 
existing gaps between technology and its application to real cases. Through the workshop, the end 
users will present practical requirements and technologists will share their latest ideas and results.
The workshop will consist of invited talks from prominent experts in the field and peer-reviewed 
contributions submitted to the workshop. At the end of the workshop we will prepare a report on the 
critical factors in translation research to stimulate a cooperation among all stakeholders.
