               IEEE BioRob 2014 Workshop on

  Robotic Microsurgery and Image-Guided Surgical Interventions

======================================================================================

Date: August 12, 2014

Venue: The 2014 IEEE International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics, São Paulo, Brazil

Website: www.surgicalrobotics.eu<http://www.surgicalrobotics.eu>

Microsurgeries are demanding operations that require high precision and dexterity. They also represent a surgical area in which robotics can have a deep impact, helping surgeons perform more accurate and safer operations, or even pioneer previously impossible procedures. A number of robotic systems are already being used clinically for microsurgeries, including robotic catheters, neurosurgery robots and even the Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci system. In addition, many other are being developed around the globe in numerous research centers. This full-day workshop will provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area and offer an open platform for surgeons and engineers to discuss recent findings, unmet needs, major research issues and new research opportunities, including research on microsurgical systems design and control, surgeon-robot interfaces, imaging, surgical planning and safety.

* Topics:

  Discussions will cover the current status, major issues and critical technological advancements required for the achievement of meaningful and beneficial impact on surgical and patient outcomes. Discussion topics include (but are not limited to):

  * Microsurgery techniques and clinical cases

  * Micro-robotics

  * Miniaturized actuators & surgical MEMS

  * Image-guided systems

  * Needle steering

  * Robotic endoscopes and catheters

  * In-vivo diagnosis

  * Real-time cancer imaging

  * Surgeon-robot interfaces

  * Surgical planning

  * Supervisory and assistive systems

* Organizers:

  Dr. Leonardo Mattos, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genoa, Italy

  Dr. Sarthak Misra, University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands

* Workshop Format:

  The workshop will consist of invited presentations by expert clinicians and researchers working in the topic areas; contributing presentations and posters selected through a peer-review process; and open discussions chaired by the organizers.

* Contributions:

  Contributions are solicited in the form of short abstracts (1 page, single column) related to the workshop topics. Accepted contributions will be presented either orally or as posters. The template for submission can be found on the workshop website.

  Submit contributions in PDF to surgicalrobotics.eu at gmail.com<mailto:surgicalrobotics.eu at gmail.com>

* Important dates:

  30 June 2014 - Abstract submission deadline

  10 July 2014 - Notification of acceptance

  12 August 2014 – Workshop date

* Venue:

  The venue for BioRob and this workshop is the Anhembi Convention Center in São Paulo, one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in the world driving a “brave new emerging world” – Brazil and Latin America. São Paulo, the largest metropolis of South America, is easily accessible from all over the world.
