  With recent advances in robotics, the development of ever more intelligent robots designed to help people working in hazardous environments becomes possible. However, robots deployed in those complex hazardous environments, such as working underwater, with mines, building facades etc. may face various challenges related to environment perception, motion planning and control, mechanism and advanced artificial intelligence settings caused by the complexity of working environments. 
  There are many robot systems that have been successfully deployed in simple structural environments, such as standard manufactories. Recently, researchers have also been trying to include robots into even more complex environments. Unfortunately, research reports on that subject are fairly fragmented, making it difficult for experts in different fields to share their findings. 
  In this issue, we will focus on the subject of robots working in complex environments and related topics such as:      Perception algorithms and systems     Motion planning and control     Novel mechanical executors and devices     Human-robot interaction and collaboration     Intelligent recognition     Practical robot systems
