The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering is pleased to
announce a design competition <http://www.popupcad.org/competition/>
revolving around "pop-up" robots to be held in the Fall. This fabrication
technique involves the use of laminated composites to create complex
kinematics, embedded circuits, and self-folding, origami-inspired robots.
This technique has been facilitated through popupCAD
<http://www.popupcad.org>, a new design tool which facilitates the creation
of laminate geometries and which can be used to generate and analyze
designs for manufacuturability.

We are reaching out to researchers and teachers who might be interested in
participating in one way or another by adding a component to their design
courses or mentoring a team in their lab. We will be adding content
throughout the summer on the website <http://www.popupcad.org> so that,
come fall, designers will have the basic tools they need to develop a
laminate, "popup" device, and submit their designs, and so that teachers
can add some popup-related content to their classes.

If you are interested in competing or participating through judging or
mentoring, please register <http://www.popupcad.org/newsletter/>on the
mailing list to stay up-to-date as deadlines and rules are announced, and
as website content gets posted. Also, if you know anyone who is teaching a
course that could use it, who might be interested in judging or sponsoring
the contest, or might want to participate in some other way, please feel
free to pass this on.
