This year, the IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive
Communication (RO-MAN) for 2016 will be held from August 26 – 31, 2016 at
Columbia University, Teachers College in New York City! The conference will
highlight productive working partnerships between humans and robots by
convening the theme of Human-Robot Collaboration that includes robotic use
in research and design, and the development of robots that interact
collaboratively with humans, and support human-human collaboration.

This coming year is the 25th anniversary of RO-MAN, and the organizing
committee would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the progress
that has been made in the robots/robotics field, as well as examine how the
area of robotics is evolving in the areas of robot designs; interfaces and
interaction modalities; robot autonomy and teleoperation; robot
expressiveness; interaction kinesics; social/emotional learning and skill
acquisition by robots; and design of best practices when optimizing for
human-robot interaction.

In addition, the conference will explore new, broader definitions of
robots/robotics, such as, robotic devices that augment human performance
(both physically and mentally), architecture/platforms for operating
robots, robots in space, ubiquitous robots, crowdsourcing human-robot
interaction based on interaction style, virtual robot apps and virtual
humans for future robot applications in education, robots in healthcare
services, exoskeleton bionic devices, role of data analytics and robots,
and implementing sophisticated cognitive mental models in robots.

Special Sessions (Submission Deadline: January 15, 2016)
Special sessions are specialized events to be held during the conference as
a set of oral presentations that are highly specialized in some particular
theme. The purpose of special sessions is to provide a focused discussion
on innovative topics. Each special session is expected to have 4 oral
presentations. Special sessions' papers will follow the same guidelines as
regular papers.

Workshops and Tutorials (Submission Deadline: January 15, 2016)
Tutorials should target established fields of research by individuals who
are advanced researchers in that field. Workshops should focus on areas of
active research, to provide an informal forum for participants to exchange
developing research results and ideas. We encourage state of the art
programs that have high levels of interest, impact, creativity and
innovation to attract a broad audience. Workshops and tutorials that focus
on academia-industry partnerships and technology transfer of robotics
research are also welcome. The primary criteria for selection are:
anticipated level of interest, impact, novelty or creativity, and technical
background of presenters.

Full Papers (Submission Deadline: February 12, 2016)
To facilitate quality interdisciplinary reviewing, authors will be required
to select a topic area for their full paper submission. These topic areas
(Empirical; Technical & Methodological; Design; Educational & Theoretical)
represent different types of contributions to human-robot interaction and
thus involve different emphasis for evaluating what constitutes a
significant contribution to the field. See below. Full papers are four to
six camera-ready pages, (with an option to extend to eight pages with an
additional fee).

Interactive Session Submission-Extended Abstracts (Deadline: May 22, 2016)
The interactive session provides a great opportunity for authors to present
their early-stage research, late breaking results, prototypes, and
prototype products to conference attendees. We encourage submissions also
from authors of paper submissions. We will provide a poster showcase area
where you will be able share your research and engage with attendees. Our
goal is to provide a highly interactive forum for lively discussions and
informative feedback from peers.

Video Submission (Submission Deadline: May 22, 2016)
Video submissions should be self-explanatory, and we encourage videos that
are innovative, informative, and engaging. Authors of successfully
peer-reviewed videos will be given time to briefly describe their video to
the conference attendees, and videos will be displayed in designated areas
at specific times during the conference. We plan to incorporate the videos
into focused discussions throughout the conference. Videos will also be
uploaded online so that attendees can post feedback to the authors.

Demonstration Submission (Submission Deadline: May 22, 2016)
The demonstration submission provides an opportunity for authors to display
and demonstrate their innovative products and prototypes. We invite
proposals showcasing relevant prototype systems that address the
conference’s topics in a thought-provoking and engaging way. Demonstrations
will occur throughout the conference, providing demonstrators with the
opportunity to speak in the setting that best suits their topic. Please
submit a two-page description of the demonstration.
