The 12th Annual ACM/IEEE HRI Conference theme is “Smart Interaction”,
following Vienna’s “Smart City” initiative.  The conference seeks
contributions from a broad set of perspectives, including technical, design,
methodological, behavioral, and theoretical, that advance fundamental and
applied knowledge and methods in human-robot interaction.

alt.HRI is a venue for radical, unconventional, thought-provoking and
rigorous submissions that have high potential for impact. This year’s
alt.HRI theme is "The Less Positive Side of HRI." Beyond human acceptance,
statistical significance and algorithmic performance lie deeper questions of
positive and negative downstream impacts, and the transformational impacts
that HRI work can have on society. Given possible detrimental effects, what
new methodologies or techniques can be proposed to encourage awareness and
more positive results? We encourage researchers to consider the bigger
picture of their work. Not just “can we do this?” but “should we?”

Submissions will be rigorously peer-reviewed, in a double-blind fashion, by
a dedicated alt.HRI program committee that will be announced on the HRI
website. Accepted papers will be orally presented in the main program and
will be archived in the ACM Digital Library and IEEE Xplore Digital Library
along with the main conference papers. Up to eight anonymized and
camera-ready pages (excluding references) are allowed. See the website for

Student Design Competition

For this year’s 12th Annual HRI Conference, we are reintroducing the Student
Design Competition, last conducted in 2008 in Amsterdam. The competition has
two primary goals:

To provide graduate and undergraduate students with a hands-on introduction
to HRI through a team-based design project.
To engage students of diverse backgrounds working in technical, art/design,
or social science disciplines.

Building upon this year’s conference theme of smart interaction, student
teams will develop interactive robotic objects that enhance any level of the
smart city environment. We encourage teams to identify and focus on a
particular interaction context, develop their own interactive robotic
objects, and create scenarios that illustrate how their robots fit within
the lives of the humans involved. The competition therefore focuses less on
demonstrations of technical proficiency, and more on the design of
compelling interactions that inspire, surprise, and delight.

Late-Breaking Reports

The Late-Breaking Reports (LBR) venue at HRI provides authors with the
opportunity to present cutting-edge and experimental research results to the
community. It is also an excellent opportunity for researchers new to the
field to participate in the conference. 
 
All LBR submissions will be lightly peer-reviewed, and published in the
companion proceedings of the conference, which will appear in both the ACM
Digital Library and IEEExplore. Authors will retain the copyright of their
work, and can submit it to other venues.  LBRs will be presented at a poster
session during HRI 2017.

human-robot interaction in an exciting and engaging way. Accepted
