Job overview:
The Universities of Manchester, West of England and Birmingham, in 
collaboration with the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and supported 
by Sellafield Ltd., have recently secured funding from the EPSRC for a 
5-year project to undertake fundamental research in Robotics and 
Autonomous Systems (RAS) which will enable step changes to be made in 
the capabilities of industrial robotic solutions for use in the nuclear 

You will be based at the University of Manchester’s Dalton Cumbrian 
Facility in West Cumbria and will also spend time at NNL’s Workington 
Rig Hall, where there are large-scale test facilities. You will work 
closely with researchers at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, and the 
Universities of Manchester and Birmingham.

The University of Manchester’s Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF) has 
state-of-the-art irradiation test facilities and strong links with 
Sellafield Ltd, the NDA, the National Nuclear Laboratory and the nuclear 
supply chain. In 2011, the Dalton Nuclear Institute was awarded a 
Queen’s Anniversary Prize in the Diamond Jubilee round for its 
“internationally renowned research and skills training for the nuclear 

You will work as part of the DCF Robotics Group, a team comprising of 
PhD students, PDRAs and academics with expertise in communications, 
sensing, control, embedded systems and platform design. You will be 
required to travel regularly to Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham for 
project meetings, and also to liaise with collaborators from industry. 
You will also be expected to travel overseas from time to time to attend 
conferences and to meet with collaborating organisations.

This project will provide the successful candidate with the ideal 
introduction into the challenges faced in deploying robotic systems in 
the nuclear industry and the size and scope of problems therein. It will 
also provide a unique opportunity to interact with engineers from both 
the supply chain and end users in the UK and Japan.
