Dear Roboticists,

We cordially invite you to participate to the workshop on "Multidisciplinarity in Robotic Exoskeleton Technology: Towards the Enhancement of the Human Musculoskeletal System" on 24 March 2017, 14:00 at the European Robotics Forum in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK (www.erf2017.eu<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.erf2017.eu_&d=DwIFAw&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=Tj516Im8avuYphd38laiwdmB0cY7sgzaIluUYedX5k4&s=C1xqDlE_Ov2YO-829qK-oaLbvwMfR9LuZHlWZ3aO60M&e= >).

Dario Farina, Imperial College London, United Kingdom (d.farina at imperial.ac.uk<mailto:d.farina at imperial.ac.uk>)

George Nikolakopoulos, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden (geonik at ltu.se<mailto:geonik at ltu.se>)

Matteo Fumagalli, Aalborg University, Denmank (m_fumagalli at m-tech.aau.dk<mailto:m_fumagalli at m-tech.aau.dk>)

Ulrik Roijezon, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden (ulrik.roijezon at ltu.se<mailto:ulrik.roijezon at ltu.se>)

Motivation and Objective

The motivation behind the proposed special session is the growing need for developing practical and multi-dimensional robotic exoskeletons for supporting the human body and enhancing its motion capabilities. Such a vision requires the scientific conjunction of multiple disciplines, while the formulation of such multidisciplinary groups can ultimately guide technological novelty to new horizons and impact society in radical ways.

The main objective of this special session will be to bring together the leading research and industrial community in a) Biomechanics, b) Control Engineering, c) Machine Learning, d) Neurorehabilitation, e) Safety/Physio-Ergonomy, for discussing the recent developments, trends, challenges and concepts on assistive exoskeleton technology. Via the brainstorming of new ways of interconnecting different scientific and technological backgrounds for the conceptualization of multi-purpose exoskeletal appliances, the final outcome of this workshop will be the roadmap for future actions and collaborations in robotic exoskeleton technology.

The workshop will start with short presentations by selected participants on assistive robotic exoskeleton technology, provided through a prism of different scientific disciplines (biomechanics, control engineering, machine learning, neuro-rehabilitation, physio-ergonomy etc.). These presentations will provide a basis on the current developments and trends in exoskeletal devices, while highlighting the main challenges of producing advanced appliances for the enhancement of the human musculoskeletal system. In the sequel, participants from research, industry and innovation will engage in round-table brainstorming and conceptualization of a layout for developing novel multi-purpose exoskeletal solutions for the enhancement of the human musculoskeletal system.
