The LORIA lab (Nancy, France) is hiring a full-time PhD student (3-year
fully-funded position) on the subject of humanoid robot whole-body motion
planning and control. The candidate will conduct his/her research in the
LARSEN team (“Life-long Autonomy for Robots in a Sensing ENvironment”) and
will benefit from the high-end equipment of the team including an iCub
humanoid robot and a last-generation state-of-the-art full-size humanoid
robot that the team will acquire by the year 2019. The research is taking
place in the aftermath of the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), and the
thesis will capitalize on the lessons and errors learned during the
challenge especially regarding whole-body motion controllers, footstep
planners, COM trajectory planners, and humanoid state estimators.

The position will start around September-October 2017 at the convenience of
the candidate (further adjustment will be possible on a case-by-case
basis). A master’s degree or equivalent in robotics, control theory,
computer science, electrical engineering, or closely related field is
required. The candidate will have successfully completed his/her degree
before the starting date. The candidate will have to demonstrate strong
technical skills and experience in C++, ROS, Matlab, Linux environment
software development. The recruitment process is highly competitive and a

About LORIA and Nancy: The LORIA Lab is a joint laboratory between
Université de Lorraine and two French national public research
organizations, the CNRS (main public research organization in France,
interdisciplinary) and INRIA (main public research organization in
mathematics, informatics). The graduate student will be enrolled as a
Université de Lorraine PhD student. Université de Lorraine is the fifth
largest French university with over 52000 students (7900 international
students) on several campuses in the Lorraine region (French north-eastern
region close to Germany, Luxemburg, Belgium). Nancy is a medium-size city
conveniently located within 1.5 hour train ride from Paris center and 1.5
