(please pass on the following to anyone you think may be interested)

We invite applications for two Research Associate positions at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh. The successful candidates will join us as members of the Ultrax2020 project:

This is a 3-year project involving Steve Renals and Korin Richmond at Edinburgh, along with Joanne Cleland at Strathclyde. The project also has partners in the commercial sector (Articulate Instruments Ltd), and 3 National Health Service Trusts.

Ultrax2020 builds on a previous project (Ultrax) in which we developed a method for tracking tongue shapes in ultrasound image sequences, for application to speech therapy for children. Ultrax2020 aims to develop a method of classifying speech and tongue shapes to form the basis of an automatic diagnostic assessment, as well as for measuring progress objectively during. As the technology is developed it will be iteratively evaluated with Speech and Language Therapists at three NHS clinics in Scotland.

One RA position is to do with extending and optimising our approach to tracking tongue movements in ultrasound video sequences, as well as applying machine learning algorithms to perform classification of mouth configurations captured in ultrasound images:

The other RA position is to do with applying machine learning to speech and ultrasound data, and will also involve tasks like robust segmentation of the diagnostic assessment recordings:
