Applications are invited for two full time PhD students (3-year fully-funded positions) within the

1. Machine learning techniques to extract robotic surgery models from big clinical data sets.

2. Modeling, analysis and control of complex hybrid systems for high risk, high safety robotic surgery.

The two projects will investigate the structure and the actual evolution of real robot-assisted 
interventions through the examination of a large data set of approximately 200 robotic surgeries of 
different types. The first project should focus on data analysis and intervention model extraction 
using the most appropriate techniques, should identify possible variants to nominal intervention 
models and the reward functions optimized by the operating surgeons. The second project will take a 
top down approach, starting from textbook description of surgical interventions and representing 
them as complex hierarchical systems whose properties, including safety, should be formally 
described. At the end of the projects, steps of the robot-assisted interventions should be 
implemented on the da Vinci Research Kit (DVRK) of the Altair laboratory, which would execute them 

Applicants should have a MSc/MEng (or equivalent) in Engineering or a related discipline. Applicants 
must have a strong academic record in Computer Science, Mechanical or Control Engineering preferably 
with relevant experience in big data analysis, control, integration and machine learning. The 
successful candidate to the first position is expected to have a strong background in machine 
learning, mathematical model development and robot control. The successful candidate to the second 
position is expected to have a strong background in system theory, hybrid system control, and formal 
property analysis. Both candidates must be able to work in a heterogeneous multi-disciplinary team, 
and be able to test their results on the laboratory robots. The positions will start in October 2017.

About ALTAIR and Verona: The ALTAIR laboratory is a laboratory of the Computer Science Department of 
the University of Verona, specializing in service and medical robotics. The laboratory was started 
17 years ago and has a staff of three professors, two post-doc researchers, eight PhD students, and 
many Master's and Bachelor students. The PhD students will be enrolled as University of Verona 
doctoral students. The University of Verona is a medium university with over 20,000 students. Verona 
is conveniently located at the intersection of the Venice-Milan and Bologna-Brenner train lines,
