The Faculty of Technolgy at Bielefeld University and the Fraunhofer
Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation
(IOSB) are jointly seeking to fill a position as full professor for
„Cognitive Automation“. The position will be granted initially for five
years; candidates will receive tenure after successful evaluation.
Candidates will be expected to lead the department for cognitive
automation technologies of the applied research center „Industrial
Automation“  at the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System
Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB-INA) in Lemgo.

The applied research center Industrial Automation (IOSB-INA) develops
innovative hardware and software solutions in the areas of industrial
internet, intelligent automation and system usability. Core competences
include the interconnection, analysis, monitoring as well as the
user-centered design of cyperphysical systems.

Candidates will have a strong international and thematically broad track
record in the areas of intelligent and cognitive systems, robotics
and/or automation. They are expected to contribute to the undergraduate
and graduate curricula at the faculty of technology and to cooperate
with other groups at the department, in particular with the Cognitive
Interaction Technology Excellence Center (CITEC).

Candidates are expected to perform research and develop new methods,
software architectures and algorithms in the areas of cognitive systems
and robotics with the goal of supporting the development of more
flexible, robust, intelligent, interconnected and easily reconfigurable
adaptive manufacturing processes as well as to support their monitoring
and optimization.

Successful candidates will be expected to develop a portfolio comprising
as many of the following areas as possible:

●      Machine Learning for Automation (e.g. Process Mining, Predictive
Maintenance, Problem diagnosis)
●      Self-configuring systems in manufacturing
●      Integration of autonomous cognitive systems (e.g. robots) intro
manufacturing processes
●      Security and robustness of cognitive systems in manufacturing
●      Cognitive Systems for the control and monitoring of complex
assembly lines
●      Intelligent interconnection, synchronization and monitoring of
heterogeneous and geographically distributed manufacturing processes
●      Cognitive Systems for the optimization of resources in manufacturing
●      Software architectures for cognitive systems that support
adaptive and reconfigurable manufacturing processes

The ability to contribute to the above research areas should be
demonstrated by a corresponding publication record. We expect experience
in the coordination of scientific projects, in particular collaborative
projects as well as the demonstrated ability to acquire third party
funding. Experience in working on projects with industry partners is

Formal requirements for the position include graduate studies at an
higher education center, an excellent PhD degree as well as pedagogical
suitability. Additional scientific qualifications obtained after the
PhD, acquired, e.g. as part of a habilitation or postdoctoral period,
are required.
