de Maeztu" Strategic Research Programme.

participated by the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and 
the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) that conducts research in 
human-centered robotics and automatic control. The institute, is a key 
player in the Spanish robotics and automatic control scenes, and a 
valued participant in a large number of international collaborations 
including more than ten ongoing H2020  projects and an ERC advanced 
grant.Recently, is has been recognized as a Maria de Maeztu Excellence 
Unit, the main accreditation given by the Spanish Government to research 
units that stand out for the impact and international relevance of their 

All the PhD positions are fully covered with a three-year contract 
(extendable for a further year) under the "María de Maeztu" Strategic 
Research Programme.
Each position will include specific funding for enrolment fees, research 
stays, training courses and other research expenses.
Starting date of the contracts: First trimester of 2018.

*ABOUT POSITION (1): **PhD Student - Fractionary systems in mechanical 
and fuel cell systems
*_Supervisors:_ Dr. Federico Thomas and Dr. Ramon Costa.

_Project:_ The thesis project will consist in the development of 
fractionary based modeling and control methods. In recent times, 
fractional mathematical and computational tools haven been developed so 
that fractional calculus can be used to model and control many different 
applications. Currently there’s a bunch of new frameworks were these 
tools are being used. In this thesis fractionary based modeling and 
control methods will be developed having in mind two main applications 
frameworks: fuel cell systems, and flexible and deformable mechanical

ABOUT POSITION (2): ***PhD Student - Action planning and synchronization 
for human-robot collaboration*
****_Supervisors:_ Dr. Alberto Sanfeliu and Dr. Pablo Jiménez
_Project:_ The collaboration between a robot and a person involves 
knowing the tasks that each of them will perform, knowing how each one 
will perform the task and find a shared common plan.
For this reason, both the robot and the person create their own plan to 
tackle the task. This plan has to be shared, readjusted and finally 
executed by both of them.
The objective of the thesis project is to develop a new model of task 
planning, which allows to make a plan shared between the robot and the 
person who is susceptible of modification, synchronization and inline

*ABOUT POSITION (3): **PhD Student - Supervision and control in 
human-centered robot
*_Supervisors:_ Dr. Vicenç Puig and Dr. Guillem Alenyà

_Project: _ Human-centered robotics is a challenging field that involves 
complex dynamic systems. In this PhD project, new supervision algorithms 
will be developed that explicitly account for safety issues in the 
context of bi-manual manipulation in social applications. Learning and 
planning algorithms will be used to continuously improve real-time 
supervision rules and to identify critical issues. Performance 
considerations are mandatory as evaluation will be performed using 
redundant mobile-manipulation robots

*ABOUT POSITION (4): **PhD Student - Human movement and action 
estimation for Robot-Human Collaboration
*_Supervisors:_ Dr. Francesc Moreno and Dr. Alberto Sanfeliu.

_Project: _ In order to perform collaborative tasks involving robots and 
humans, the robot needs to predict the 3D motion and intentions of the 
human person.
Based on Deep Learning techniques, this thesis proposal seeks to learn 
from one or several sequences of positions which action the person is 
going to do and which specific 3D body position will take.
The images will be obtained directly from the mobile robots that is 
interacting with the human or by means of an aerial robot that oversees 
the whole sequence of operations.
