Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University are seeking outstanding candidates for a joint tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2018 in the area of Interactive Robotics. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in development of platforms, architectures, and algorithms, for humanoid or non-humanoid robotics. Specific areas of interest for this position include the design of robotic systems that are capable of non-trivial expressive interaction, with or without human-interaction, including elements of improvisation and creativity, as well as ensembles of animated physical objects.  Appointment may be made at the Assistant or Associate rank commensurate with candidate’s experience and accomplishments.

The tenure home is expected to be in the School of Arts, Media, Engineering. Although a joint appointment may be in any of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the Mechanical Engineering program (SEMTE), Biomedical Engineering program (School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering), Computer Science program (School of Computing, Informatics, & Decision System Engineering), or Electrical Engineering (School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering) currently the most involved in the interest areas of the search. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in fostering inter-disciplinary scholarly collaboration: including but not limited to engineering, science, health, arts, and/or humanities.

The School of Arts, Media and Engineering is a leading transdisciplinary program in media arts and sciences. The appointee's efforts will merge with efforts of other faculty for the achievement of significant advancements in experiential media and more broadly the relation between culture and computing. The appointee is expected to further existing research connections between the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering in areas of common interest related to the appointee’s interests and strengths , be involved in the development of new undergraduate and graduate curriculum in Digital Culture, and further develop our connections to industry.

Required Qualifications:

•       PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, with a specialization in autonomous or semi-autonomous systems, or robotics

•       Teaching experience at undergraduate or Masters levels

•       Evidence of ability to define, lead and obtain support for PhD research

Desired Qualifications:

•       Evidence of ability and willingness to collaborate on creative applications

•       Ability to communicate technical ideas to non-specialized audiences

•       Ability to mentor graduate students or advanced undergraduates in research projects

•       A candidate with experience in research and education spanning arts, design, humanities and engineering
