We have a new industry-sponsored project at the Department of Mechanical
Engineering of PolyU

With the aim of "reversing" skin damage, in recent years people have turned
to the so-called beauty clinics (specially in East Asia) to receive various
types of dermatological treatments. A typical rejuvenation procedure is as
follows: First, a dermatologist examines the skin conditions of the
patient, and determines the appropriate procedure to be performed. Then,
s/he manually places a cosmetic instrument over different regions on the
patient’s face. The instrument could be e.g. a laser or a radiofrequency
emitting devices that must be activated with the exact amount of time and
intensity in order to produce the expected results without damaging the
skin. Acquiring these set of skills and experience takes practitioners
several years, which aggravates the current shortage of certified
professionals in the industry. The aim of this university-industry
collaborative project is to develop a new sensor-guided robotic system with
the capability of automatically manipulating the instruments and performing
a skin rejuvenation procedure.

We have one Post-doctoral / Research Associate position in sensor-based
control of manipulators. The candidate will be responsible for developing a
real-time vision-based controller to manipulate the instrument over the
patient’s face. S/he should have a PhD degree (or a master's degree for the
Research Assoc. post) in robotics or related disciplines, and track record
experience in systems integration, image processing, and control of robot
manipulations (preferably from UR robotics). S/he should be able to
independently work under pressure, with minimal supervision, and
communicating effectively with the industrial sponsor.

Salary will be highly competitive and according to the high living
standards of Hong Kong, where salary tax is amongst the lowest in the world
