Fellow position in Legged Robot Design - Humanoid and Human-Centred Mechatronics Research Line

The Humanoid and Human Centred Mechatronics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia(IIT), an English-language research Institute in Genoa (Italy), is currently one of the world leading research group in the design and development of novel robotic platforms, and is seeking to appoint a well-motivated fellow with a strong ambition to pursue a research careertowards the design (and control) of legged robots for real-world tasks.

At the time of the application, the prospected candidate is about to receive a Master's Degree in engineering or computer science or has already received a corresponding Master's Degree not more than 6 months ago.

Due to unique potentiality of legged robots in locomoting over various terrains and operating in unstructured environments, development of such platforms has attracted increasing attention over the past few years. Moreover, a variety of actuation units enhancing the system's energy efficiency and dynamic performance has been developed, on the basis of variable/fixed stiffness and damping units in series and/or parallel. Yet, the performance and efficiency of floating based platforms is subject to additional criteria that are often omitted; thereby preventing long-time performance required for real-world applications.

This research topic will focus on the limb/structure design aspects when adopting state-of-the-art robotics actuation and transmission systems, and utilising energy recycling techniques and bio-inspired control principles. The outcome of this study will be a novel legged robot performing energy efficient dynamic motions such as jumping. The selected applicant of this position will join an interdisciplinary research group and have the opportunity to pursue research within the H2020 Cogimon project, funded by the European Commission under the grant agreement n. 644727.

Requirements: The successful applicant for this area is expected to have a background in Mechanical/Mechatronic/Electrical engineering, Physical Sciences or Robotics. Candidates should have competencies in mechanical design and understanding of robot dynamics/kinematics and control.
