The European Robotics League - Service Robots (ERL-SR) is an innovative
concept for robot competitions that focuses on tasks executed by domestic
service robots in a real home environment.

The ERL started in 2016 and had two successul Seasons (2016/17 and 2017/18).
The new ERL framework for 2018-21 is composed of multiple Local or Major
Tournaments (planned for the 2018/19 and 2020/21 Seasons), held in different
research labs across Europe, with certified test beds, or as part of major events
such as top Robotics conferences, and two Smart City Tournaments in 2019
(Milton Keynes, UK) and 2021 (city TBA).

During the year-long Tournament Seasons, teams participate in a minimum of two
tournaments per year and get scores based on their performances. Scores of the
best two participations in tournaments for each team are added and teams are
ranked based on their cumulative score. Prizes for the top teams are awarded
during the next year’s European Robotics Forum (ERF), e.g., ERF2019 for the
2018/19 Season.

Participating teams in the 2018/19 Season are candidates to take part in the
Major ERL Smart City tournament in Milton Keynes, UK, to be held in the Fall 2019.

As part of the 2018/19 Season, we are pleased to announce a Major Tournament
of the ERL Service Robots (ERL-SR) challenge, to be held between 01-05 October
2018 at the Madrid Municipal Conference Centre as part of the IEEE/RSJ International
Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2018) Competitions Track

Important dates:
  18 May 2018 - Deadline for application
  01 Jun 2018 - Qualification announcement
  01 October 2018 - Competition begins
  05 October 2018 - Competition ends

NOTE: This document is a draft and is provided for information only.
The current version of the rulebook for the 2018/2019 Season is being created and will be
updated in the upcoming weeks.

For the Local ERL-SR Tournaments, the following task benchmarks (TBMs) will be
(tentatively) considered:

         • TBM1: Getting to Know My Home
         • TBM2: Welcoming Visitors
         • TBM3: Catering for Granny Annie's Comfort
         • TBM4: Visit My Home

Applicant teams must send an email to erl.service at robotics-league.eu expressing their
intention to participate in the Tournament and providing the following information about
the team:

       - Team name
       - Team Leader name
       - Total number of team members (including the team leader)
       - Affiliation
       - Contact information (e-mail and phone of team leader)
       - Website
       - Qualification material (see below).

Qualification Material - applicants are required to submit (template can be downloaded from

       - Team Description Paper (TDP) (max. 4 pages, LNCS [3]) explaining the team’s
approach to the technical challenges - including:
        i) the list of TBMs the team intends to participate in
ii) a brief description of the robot system software and hardware architectures
iii) the relation with the team research - including a list of relevant publications
      - Video showing evidence of some performance in the tasks and/or functionalities selected by the team

Selection Criteria:
Teams will be selected for participation based on
    - Number of available slots for team participation in the tournament (8 / eight, in this case);
     -Team research quality, as measured from the TDP and list of relevant publications;
