NIHR Imperial BRC – Surgery and Surgical Technology Theme
Location: St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Campus, London.
Reporting to: Professor Darzi and a second nominated supervisor
Working closely with other academic members, research associates, PhD students (including Clinical Research Fellows), support staff within Division of Surgery; translational partners (i.e. charities, funders, health and care providers, other academic institutions, potentially overseas partners, industry etc.); Imperial CRUK Centre; Institute of Global Health Innovation.
36 months, with possibility of fixed-term appointment after the PhD has been awarded
The studentship will pay EU/UK tuition fees and annual stipend of £21,000 for maximum of 36 months

Summary of Posts
Applications are invited for three PhD Studentships in the Surgical Robotics & Imaging and Diagnostics & Sensing programmes of the Surgery and Surgical Technology Theme, of the Imperial Biomedical Research Centre. There are three positions available.
Surgery and Surgical Technology Theme
The research programme in the Theme of Surgery and Surgical Technology in the Imperial NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC; https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__imperialbrc.nihr.ac.uk_&d=DwIGaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=P1ywdXgKI3z0zhjcAO5rtMpDd0dGe4jkGo-lnwRSvRo&s=0Gf6ZW-M2-M95aPImuyotMD2iJQrNc0KAXB_HTuELZA&e=), led by Professor Ara Darzi, focuses on improving the quality and safety of the surgical care pathway through technological innovations using our strong track record of interdisciplinary research in design/engineering, medicine, information technology.
Our aim is to continue to translate innovations, in a safe and cost-effective manner, with significant health and economic impact and transferable across all surgical specialties as the output of three inter-related programmes of research:
• Programme 1 - Surgical Robotics and Allied Technologies
• Programme 2 - Diagnostics and Sensing;
• Programme 3 - Translation and Service Delivery.
This call is for PhD studentships who will work as part of programmes 1 and 2. Please note that projects are currently being scoped and successful applicants will have the ability to define the research projects. Programme 1 – Surgical Robotics, Allied Technologies and Imaging
The programme, led by Professor Ara Darzi and supported by Professor Daniel Elson (please email Professor Elson for queries regarding the programme’s research at daniel.elson at imperial.ac.uk), will focus on next generation surgical robots that are smaller, cost-effective, more specialised systems with improved visualisation, accuracy and ergonomics, spanning surgical disciplines, to further reduce the trauma of access and invasiveness of surgery.
Examples of initial project areas (not exhaustive) include:
• To use computer vision with endoscopic techniques for soft tissue tracking, surgical navigation and image-guidance.
• To link 3D deformation recovery with pre- and intra-operative data and implement multi-modality methods (light, biophotonics, ultrasound) for registration and surgical imaging.
• To translate these techniques into surgical use with seamless user interaction, manipulation and visualisation.
Programme 2 – Diagnostics and Sensing
The programme, led by Professor Ara Darzi and supported by Professor Zoltan Takats and Mr Daniel Leff (please email Professor Takats for queries regarding the programme’s research at zoltan.takats at imperial.ac.uk), will focus on technologies for peri-operative diagnosis and sensing (biophotonics, confocal imaging, mass spectrometric tissue analysis, sepsis detection sensors).
Examples of initial project areas (not exhaustive) include:
• Development of pre- and intraoperative diagnostics through novel technologies for improved screening and enhanced intraoperative diagnostics towards precision interventions.
• Integrated technology development for diagnosis and screening through enhance tissue characterisation and machine learning image recognition
• Post-operative sensing – development of wearable patch sensors for rapid detection of soft tissue infections and sensors fabricated within drainage/catheter tubes for detection of sepsis.
Qualifications and person-specifications
We are looking for candidates with a strong academic background (with a first class degree) or MSc in the following subjects:
● Biomedical Engineering
● Machine learning and AI
● Physical and analytical chemistry
Successful candidates will have experience in undertaking independent research in the above subjects. We are looking for individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas and an interest to further develop his/her skills.
• Molecular spectroscopy
• Organic mass spectrometry
• Chemical sensor technology
• Multivariate statistical analysis
• Software development (C++, C# or Python)
• Real-time 3D computer graphics
• Medical imaging and associated data formats
• Image processing
The PhD students will be supervised by the multi-disciplinary team in the Division of Surgery. Through the research programme at Imperial, the PhD students will benefit from strong
links and involvement with the CRUK Imperial Centre, Institute for Global Health Innovation (www3.imperial.ac.uk/global-health-innovation) and partner organisations, including:

● The Institute of Cancer Research
