Multiple open positions (Postdocs, Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) and/or
Graduate Student Interns (GSIs)) will be available for robotics research at
Department of Mechanical Engineering in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and
State University (known as Virginia Tech), USA immediately from Fall 2018.

directed by Prof. Tomonari Furukawa, with a total of 20 postdocs and
graduate students, is a vibrant research lab conducting fundamental and
applied research in areas including robotics, autonomous vehicles and
multiphysics systems.  Prof. Furukawa also led the Virginia Tech's team for
DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) in June 2015 and MBZIRC in March 2017 and is
leading the team again for MBZIRC2020.  

The positions newly open are sponsored by industry and US Government and
have the following topics
* Automated and human-assistive robotic package pick-and-place for
warehouses; 
* Autonomous robotic harvesting in vineyards; 
* Legged autonomous multi-rotor helicopters; and
* Computer vision based localization and deformation measurement for cars in
crash tests.  

Essential qualifications/skills are 
1. MS in the robotics-related field such as mechanical engineering,
mechatronic engineering, electrical engineering and computer science; 
2. Proven record of publications in a relevant research field: At least one
international journal paper or two international conference papers 
3. Strong knowledge/experience in mechanical design,
mechatronics/electronics or ROS and C++/Python programming 

Applicants interested in GRA should be admitted to Ph.D program at Virginia
Tech from Fall 2018 or otherwise should start as a GSI.  The positions will
be filled as soon as appropriate applicants are identified, and priority is
given to those who can start the position immediately.
