CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

----------------------------------------------------------

This is a call for participation to the VVV20, the International Winter School on Humanoid Robot Programming (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.icub.org_phdschool&d=DwIFAg&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=dZQwr0i1L03lgG28gbkwRV4i-gcuu6qxk9c5t7mTiYk&s=0YkD3nA6mkpvdn_OMArAsfKsea2-Y5gXgK7fKaPb9dI&e= ) that will take place in Arenzano (Italy), from March 10 to the 19th, 2020.

= Goals =

Autonomous robots are becoming increasingly more capable thanks to the continuous development of better hardware for sensing and actuation, powerful algorithms for control, and machine learning and perception. Each of these technologies is often developed independently from the other, though their integration is required to solve the challenges to deploy advanced robots outside controlled environments.
The aim of this school is to give students an overview of the state-of-the-art on the broad field of robotics. To this purpose, we aim at teaching students the required, practical, skills that allow them to program robots taking advantage of available tools and libraries for perception, control and machine learning. We propose to use humanoid robots as testbeds because they offer unique opportunities to study many of the problems that are relevant to the field of autonomous systems.

= Format =

The school is organized as a set of theoretical lectures followed by hands-on sessions using simulators as well as real robots. Students will be challenged with a set of practical assignments and a final project to be carried out in small teams. A set of evening talks by renowned researchers in robotics will complement the school activities, thus exposing students to the latest achievements in the field. Two iCub humanoid robots will be available to the students, equipped with a cluster of computers and GPUs in a dedicated LAN.

Participants are expected to have a background in robotics, computer programming in C/C++ and basic skills of git. They should also bring their own laptop to attend hands-on sessions.

= Topics =

This school will cover the following topics:

* Software architectures and middleware for robot programming
* Tools and best practices for software integration and concurrent development
* Components orchestration using finite state machines & behavior trees
* Optimization, robot kinematics and dynamics for whole body control
* Robot vision and deep learning
* Neuromorphic sensors and event-driven vision
* Reinforcement Learning

= Location =

The school will take place at the Grand Hotel Arenzano in the beautiful town of Arenzano, located in the Riviera di Ponente of the Ligurian Riviera, not far from the city of Genoa in the North of Italy.

= Important Dates =

Application deadline: January 8
Notification of acceptance: January 15
The school begins in the morning of Tuesday 10th and finishes in the evening of the 19th Students are expected to check in on Monday 9th and check out on Friday 20th. Sunday 14th will be free.

= Application =

The school is targeted to PhD students and Post-Docs, but we also accept applications from MS students and research engineers working in robotics. Perspective participants should apply following the online instructions (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.icub.org_phdschool&d=DwIFAg&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=dZQwr0i1L03lgG28gbkwRV4i-gcuu6qxk9c5t7mTiYk&s=0YkD3nA6mkpvdn_OMArAsfKsea2-Y5gXgK7fKaPb9dI&e= ).

Places are limited, acceptance will be evaluated based on the CV and the potential benefit foreseen for each applicant.

Applicants from countries outside Italy can apply for travel grants thanks to the EU project TERRINet (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.terrinet.eu_&d=DwIFAg&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=dZQwr0i1L03lgG28gbkwRV4i-gcuu6qxk9c5t7mTiYk&s=4hQTj7mK2f6B6MpzFQbJ03TZZ1x-bqu0FS5YSNT5iCY&e= ). Travel grants wave the school fee and include support for travel.
