A single studentship is available for an exceptional candidate with interest in ambient assisted living and activity monitoring domain. The bursary is a £15,009 per annum plus the payment of the student fees. Applicants are only eligible from the UK or EU. The PhDs are to start in October 2019.

Background and context:

The next natural progression in this work is to improve on the technological readiness of systems for deployment in supervised and unsupervised settings. This involves working on detection algorithms fidelity, as well as user interfaces for the triad of care namely the person under care, their relatives and the service provider.   The goal here is to detect people and everyday objects and what people do with objects. This then serves as a repository of activities that are automatically detected in support of independent living.

The PhD involves both elements of robotics and artificial intelligence, thus to enable accurate detection of activities in a robot-mediated interaction scenario.

The PhD candidate will be working under my supervision, but please note that this PhD is part of a dual award PhD with the Western Sydney University in Australia and is co-supervised with Prof Gu Fang. The dual award means that the candidate will submit their thesis to two doctorate degrees, one from the UK, and one from Australia. To support this, during the second year of the PhD, the student is placed in Sydney in order to explore existing knowledge and expertise in robotic for manufacturing and to apply that to the home companion domain.
