Salary: £27,025 to £39,609 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £30,395 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

The Department has an excellent international reputation for high quality theoretical and experimental research funded by EPSRC, DTI, EU and manufacturing industry.

The person(s) appointed will be based in the area of robotics (i.e. walking hexapod and continuum robot) development for harsh environments, working on research projects funded by EPSRC and Innovate UK. Specifically, this research will focus on robotics modelling and control algorithms of the robots for in-situ operations in constrained and hazardous environments/ manufacturing working for aerospace component productions. In this role, you will be at the forefront of research that offers significant technological challenge and innovation, with an aim to improving quality in robotics applications within nuclear and aerospace industry. As a result, this position offers the opportunity for close collaboration with industrial partners (e.g. Rolls-Royce). The opportunity to participate in some teaching activities is available for those wishing to pursue an academic career.

Candidates must possess a good knowledge of kinematic analysis, control solutions related to robotics and demonstrate strong evidence of developing their own software (in MATLAB, ROS,  C++ and/or LabVIEW) to control such systems. Previous expertise in developing customised mechatronics/robotics (e.g. for manipulation/surveillance) would be preferable.

Apart from being capable to lead the research work on this project, good communication, presentation/reporting and publishing skills are required for the person appointed to effectively interact with the international academic and industrial partners involved in this demanding research project. In addition to carrying out project work, the researcher will benefit from exposure to internationally leading industrial companies that are interested in the results of this project and willing to collaborate on spin-put individual projects.

Candidates must possess a good first Degree or Master's in robotics/mechatronics/mechanical/ engineering or related disciplines, and a PhD (or near completion) in robotics/mechatronics or related field of mechanical engineering.

This full-time post is available from 1 October 2019, however a late start date could be agreed, and will offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of one year. Job share arrangements may be considered.
