The appointments are part of a strategic plan to expand the University of Bristol’s Robotics and Autonomous Systems research, teaching and innovation over the next five years.

We are seeking to appoint outstanding candidates who will enhance the existing robotics and autonomous systems research portfolio in the school: soft robotics, smart materials, morphological computation, swarm robotics, dexterous manipulation, tactile robotics, bio-inspired robotics, multi-agent systems, autonomous decision-making, design and verification of autonomous systems, real-world autonomy and AI/machine learning for robotics. One of the positions is specifically targeted at the soft robotics activity of the SoftLab research group following the award of a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies to Professor Jonathan Rossiter.

Candidates must show an established or rapidly growing international standing and evidence this through original research outputs including high-quality publications and research funding. Applicants are expected to demonstrate their potential to become part of an internationally leading research team, involved in high-quality research outputs and with the potential to secure research funding, including through industry collaboration. At the more senior level, an established track record of funding and leadership will be required. We are seeking to appoint candidates with the ability to teach Robotics and Autonomous Systems as well Engineering Mathematics or Computer Science students up to masters level and to engage with masters project supervision.

Robotics and Autonomous Systems activity at the University of Bristol also benefits of a partnership with the University of the West of England through the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), a 4,500sqm dedicated facility on the Frenchay Campus, comprising the largest robotics facility in the UK. The Bristol Robotics Laboratory partnership also runs a joint MSc programme in Robotics and also the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Autonomous Robotic Systems (FARSCOPE-TU). The successful candidates will also have the opportunity to propose and supervise projects to PhD students in the FARSCOPE Centre for Doctoral Training. The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the development and growth of new programmes over the next five years. At the more senior level, experience of programme development and leadership is desirable. At all levels, passion for innovation in teaching and in research-led teaching is essential.
